Potty Training my mortal enemy

You know I knew parenting wasn’t gonna be a cake walk. And after three years with my kid I knew he was gonna be difficult atleast 80% of the time. What I didn’t know what that attempting to potty train him was gonna break my soul.

Okay maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration but I haven’t failed this hard at something in a longtime. And even though GB has at times been a challenge for learning new skills he has generally picked things up quickly and moved right along.

Well not with potty training. It has been one disgusting, awful and downright horrifying incident after the next. There are pictures but for the sake of your appetites and his future teenage self I am not sharing them online. You’re welcome.

I have read about every method, every trick and treat. I have tried stickers, prizes, candy and a freaking trip to the beach. We have tried pants, no pants, pull ups and big boy underpants. Ive sat up reading comment sections and forums till way past my bedtime. And nothing has been working.

So we gave up. Accepted that now might not be the right time. Stopped asking him and prodding him and even talking about it. And oddly enough he has suddenly had some success. Still plenty of messes and accidents but letting his mind figure it out without us seemed to be what he needed.

I think this process is far from over. I anticipate many more accidents and clean ups. But hopefully this is a step in the right direction towards beating my enemy. And towards GB mastering this next milestone.

Because seriously I can’t unsee these things and I need the diaper budget for some therapy.

Anyone else have their own war with potty training? What worked well for you? Did you have any adult temper tantrums?

Leave me some comments

Until next time

GBs 3rd Birthday Lilo and Stich Luau

Well I’m a bit late getting this up but we’ve just been a bit busy around here. Last week I watched my lovely friend Jelly’s little boy.

So this year we decided to have an actual themed bday party for GB. Last year we had just moved and we threw a BBQ our wonderful neighbors all came to. And for his first bday we moved from Seattle to North Carolina. So he deserved a good one.

He has recently decided he loves Lilo and Stitch so we decided it would be a blast to throw a luau. All our wonderful friends came out and Jelly made him an amazing cake and cupcakes. We had some pulled pork, huli huli chicken, Hawaiian Cole slaw and Mac salad. It was tasty and fun.

It was an absolute blast!

A letter to my son on this third birthday

First off he can’t truly be three! Nope I refuse to accept it. Okay okay I’ll accept it. But not happily. If you’d like to read the letter I wrote for his First and Second birthdays you can click those links.
My sweet honey monkey,

Well another year has come and gone and today you are three. Sometimes I catch myself wishing you older because this age can be challenging. And then sometimes I find myself wishing I could just make it stop. Wishing for one day I could freeze time and do whatever you wanted all day with you. To not have anything else to do but enjoy you.

Since the moment of your birth I have been in awe of you, and a bit exhausted by you. You are in a constant state of movement. You are bubbling over with joy. You are piss and vinegar and just a wild heart. Every day I see these little traits become pillars of your personality.
At three you are almost potty trained. You are utterly obsessed with Thomas the train. All trains. Truly it’s trains trains trains here.

You love movies and have fallen in love with adventure time and old batman cartoons. You still love flapjack. And he finally seems fond of you. Daddy coming home still fills you with delight and you finally are pretty great about sleeping. You love coloring and books. Going for walks and you have made some friends.

And you continue to amaze us. You are so smart. You understand so much and people CONSTANLY ask us if you’re older because you are a giant and you speak so much and so well. Talking a lot with be both a blessing and curse and I hope it doesn’t make you feel bad when people tell you that you talk to much. I love your chatter. Your stories. How passionately you share them.

You love your family so much and got to spend a bunch of time with them this year. It’s been awesome.

I never know what to write you. I can’t express the blessing you are. That even when I’m mad at you I want to tell myself to let it go and just hold you. You have taught me much more than I expected to learn. My love for you is nothing short of gigantic, monsterous, humongous! I did not know how much you would change my world.

Sweet GB never stop being silly. Never stop telling people how much you love them, how funny you think they are and giving them hugs when they are sad. Never stop your quest for knowledge. Your hunger for adventure. Never stop being fun or your wild and silly self.

Thank you for being mine. For loving me each day and cutting me lots of slack when I’m not the best mum. No matter how badly I feel I did that day you always hug me tight and tell me you love me. Your love is proof my greatest accomplishment. You.

You are my world. That will never change.

Happy Birthday my sweet boy

Why mothers are important

It’s almost Mother’s Day. Before I had a child this was generally a time of butt kissery for my mum. I sucked up for one day a year to make up for the other 364 I made her want to scream. Sorry about that mum. Seriously so so sorry.

Now that I’m a mum myself I not only get to love on my mum and my MIL but I get a little love myself. Mostly from my wonderful husband because my son still thinks a head butt in the face is loving. But either way still awesome.

I mean my mum gave me life! And she didn’t take it away in any of the instances that would have been totally justified. Yup I know simple….but true. My mum gave me life and then put up with me for well….lets see almost 29 years. That is pretty impressive. And at different points in your life mums will mean different things to you. My mum and my friends mums were awesome, and caring. They helped shape the woman I am today. The mums in my life these days tend to be my mum friends, and let me just tell you i’d be up whining poopy baby creek without a diaper if I didn’t have them!

And being a mum is hard. It can be the most exhausting thing you’ve ever done. But it’s also amazing. One minute you want to run away to a tropical island and the next you swear you’ll die if you can’t hold that child close to you. It’s certainly the best job I’ve ever had. I was horribly underprepared for it and the learning curve has been steep. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Thank you to the mums in my life. To my beautiful mum Fiona for giving me life, raising me, tolerating me, loving me thru my “difficult” years and still helping me almost daily. You are the reason I am the woman I am. Your love shaped me.

To my friends who keep me sane. Kelly, Courtney, Tatum and Bri (the keeks count) you are the best part of my days. And being able to be open and honest about this job makes it easier. I am so proud to call you all friend. Thank you for always listening when I’m freaking out.

To my mother in law thanks for being a great MIL. For never tearing me down, judging my choices or making me feel not good enough. I hit the MIL jackpot.

To all the mothers in my life….Happy Mother’s Day.

Day out with Thomas

So a few weeks ago my wonderful mother came to town! Which always just makes me so happy. We have so much fun eating, shopping and spending time as a family.

This trip was extra special though, because she got to stay longer and we were taking GB to his very special (early) birthday surprise. If you know our son you know he is hands down obsessed with all things Thomas the train. All trains really but Thomas is his favorite. Followed closely by Percy. Well the geniuses in marketing found a really neat way to make more money. Make an actual talking Thomas train that you attach to a regular train. I’m not gonna lie its amazing!! Day out with Thomas was one of the cooler things I’ve done with my son.

We did ours in downtown Grapevine. Which if you haven’t been down there you need to. It absolutely precious. The food and shopping is great and the atmosphere can’t be beat. Plus if you drink they have a winery about every two feet. 😄

We headed down a bit early got all checked in and GB got to see one of his best friends brought to life. It was so fun. They had imagination stations, movie stations, pictures with sir Tophom Hat, a petting zoo.

The trian ride it self was quite a lot of fun and there really weren’t many crying or unhappy kids at all. Everyone seemed pretty excited to be riding on this beautiful old train.

We had some snacks there and let GB just play and go nuts. They didn’t even require you to buy their food and drink as no one checked our bags when we entered. They had clean restrooms and friendly staff. And they had enough dates that it wasn’t over crowded. Overall we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Afterwards we did a little shopping, had some lunch and took a very tired little boy home.

My skin care routine

The other day yet another friend asked me about my skin care routine and the brands I use. She also asked if I had done a blog post about it! What a great question? I realized I had not and decided it was past time that I share how I care for my skin and with what.

I’m also thinking I need to round up some of my favorite beauty and hair products for you guys soon too.

Okay so the biggest change I saw for my skin was when I started a consistent routine. Even just a simple one of wash, tone, treat and moisturizer will give you great results. The other thing I learned is skin care isn’t an over night success. It can take awhile to see the improvements in your skin. So you have to give it time.

So everyday I wake up and I wash my face with my Clarisonic. I’m super lucky I was given mine as a gift by a fabulous friend. I use Olay’s foaming cleanser which I really like. After I cleanse my face I wipe with with either a Vitamin C toner (AM) or a homemade Apple cider vinegar toner (PM) I then follow with a Vitamin C serum for daytime and at night I use a Retinol Serum and an Eye cream. During the day I use a moisturizer with SPF, I like at least 50 but also use one that’s 30. Both are by Cetaphil.

I’m also a big fan of treatments and masks. I mask two to three times a week. This One by Alba is great. I also like doing a mask with bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar and a little raw honey. I have another favorite which is my turmeric face mask and I will be sharing that recipe on my blog soon. Along with some silly face mask pictures. I truly love most masks, the paper ones are always good for a laugh.

Oh and for acne I LOVE this drying lotion. It’s a bit of a unique product and a little goes a long way. I also do a baking soda mask twice a month for that as well as a sugar scrub. I make it with course sugar, raw honey and lemon juice.

Okay a bit of a rambling post. But I wanted to share my favorite products. Which if you didn’t notice most of them are by a company called Amara Organics. I am slowly transitioning most of my products over to their line. Finding them has been amazing. I can’t wait to try even more of their products my skin just loves them. Plus they have phenomenal customer service. They are a small company I hope to see grow. So check them out. And this is not a sponsored post I just really love them.

If you have any questions please just ask. I will get that facemask recipe up next week.

Butternut Squash Brownies

So a few weeks ago the hubs and I decided to kick unhealthy carbs and processed foods and sugars out of our diets. But my body still wanted a treat now and then. Someone had mentioned zucchini brownies to me but something about sweet delicious butternut squash just felt more brownie like. So thus my need to come up with a recipe was born!

I got all the ingredients I wanted to include together and started tinkering in the kitchen. My first go tasted great but no matter how long I baked them they stayed pudding-y in the middle and once cooled felt far to wet for a brownie. The hubs practically gagged once it touched his tongue. Granted he is not a fan of my healthy baking but he will usually eat one.

So back to the drawing board I went. A couple times until I got the liquids just right. I also ordered an all natural confections so these brownies could have some frosting 😋 I went with Swerve and was very pleased. And so was GB.

I’m pretty proud since this is the first baked goods recipe I’ve completely written myself. So please let me know if you make them by tagging me on Instagram and Twitter @FranklyTannith and tag #butternutsquashbrownies And if you have any suggestions or additions I’d love to hear them.

Butternut Squash Brownies:

-Ingredients

•3/4 cup puréed butternut squash

•2 tsp vanilla

•1/4 cup apple sauce

•1/4 cup stevia baking blend (or your choice of sweetener)

•1/3 cup cocoa powder

•1 tsp egg whites

•1/4 cup chocolate chips (plus additional to throw in at the end about 3 tablespoons)

•1 tbsp coconut oil

•1/2 cup oat flour

•1/2 tsp salt

•1/2 tsp baking soda

-Directions

•preheat oven to 350 degrees

•coat an 8 inch pan

•melt chocolate chips and coconut oil in microwave. I did it in 20 second increments until melted.

•combine squash, stevia, cocoa powder, vanilla, apple sauce and egg whites with a mixer.

•add chocolate chips/coconut oil mix until creamy

•add flour, salt and baking soda. Mix until combined.

•pour into pan and bake on the bottom rack for 30-35 minutes. Mine were perfect at 30 but my oven cooks hot.

•let coo

Frosting recipe:

•1 cup confectioners sugar or swerve confections sugar

•3 tablespoons butter spread

•1 tsp vanilla

•1 tablespoon sour cream

Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Then top your cooled brownies. And devour them.

Hope you guys enjoy! These are even hubs approved!

DIY canvas shoe makeover

So I’ve been away for a bit but I’m back with a fun, easy DIY I did last week. I love these canvas shoes! I bought them to wear to my step sons graduation back a few years ago. And they just haven’t faired well. They light beige gets dirty constantly and I always feel like no matter how well I clean them they end up dirty. So I decided to dye them!

I picked up a thing of Rit Dye in “camel” at the store and got to work. I already had tape and a foam brush so this was a pretty inexpensive project.

I started by taping the areas I didn’t want dyed. However for full disclosure purposes since I wanted to do the edges the dye sadly bled into the soles. Oh well. This however would not happen if you weren’t attempting to get the edges like I was.

I mixed up my dye. I did about 1/4 cup dye with 2 cups water. I wet the canvas down first so it would dye evenly. Then I just lightly sponged the dye on. I did two coats after letting it soak in and dry partially.

I let it sit for an hour or so and then rinsed the canvas well.

I’m pretty pleased with how they turned out. However I wish I’d gone for bright pink or green. It would have been fun to have to wild colored wedges for summer.

I’ll be back Friday with a recipe for my remineralizing toothpaste 😊

Have a great Monday!

The blues

Sorry I haven’t kept up with my normal Monday and Friday posts. I sort of had a case of the blues the last couple weeks. And instead of sharing some recipes, reviews and crafts I holed up with my little man and my feelings during the days.

I seem to have mostly shaken the funk I was in. It has been awhile since I felt tired just from my emotions and it wasn’t a welcome return at all. Nothing scares someone who has battled deep depression more than feeling it creep back in.

But thankfully I know my body and I know the things I can do to help pull myself back out.

I figured I would write a little note and let everyone know I will be getting back to my normal posts here soon.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Motherhood the job I suck most at

Atleast that’s how I feel at night when I’m laying in bed going over the thousands of ways I messed up that day. Nothing really prepared me for who I would be once I became a mother. The mum I imagined being as a young girl is so different than the one I am.

There are ways I am better than I imagined I could be back then but those are easy to forget when I am failing for the 100th time that week so keep my temper in check. I didn’t want to he the mum who raised her voice. I wanted to he the mum who remained calm and collected when things got hard.

Instead I find myself scared, angry, frustrated and disappointed constantly. And not with my child. With myself. That is not to say my sweet little snowflake doesn’t misbehave and deserve to he reprimanded I just feel I get way to upset about little stuff.

So how do I stop sweating the little things? How do I be a firm yet loving mum. I want to teach my son so much and I want him to know that I love him with every fiber of my being. I just struggle with finding balance.

I know I’m not alone. I read post after post of mothering feeling this way. It’s nice to know im not alone but I also don’t want to continue feeling overwhelmed and scared I’m messing my child up. I want to know I’m doing enough.

I am naturally a loud and expressive person. But I am working on picking the situations in which I need to raise my voice. I am working on being more patient with the mistakes my son makes, because after all he is still learning to be a human. And I apparently am too.
